How Pasta Causes Depression AnxietyStudy Finds Women Who Eat More Pasta Have More Depression

A study of over 43,000 women found that women who ate more pasta, refined grains, chips, fatty red meat, and soda, had a 29% to 41% higher rate of depression. Article. Video.

While pasta causing depression anxiety is getting the headlines, all the foods listed in the study, cause depression anxiety in the same way – inflammation.

Researchers studying the blood of the women who consumed higher amounts of these foods found that they tested significantly higher for three biomarkers of inflammation.  The study authors correctly point out that increased inflammation is associated with depression anxiety.

However, says study coauthor Michel Lucas, PhD, of the Harvard School of Public Health, “It’s not clear exactly how inflammation and depression are linked”.

It is clear. Inflammation in the hippocampus region of the brain, responsible for learning, memory, and mood, increases the synaptic gap between neurons, the space between your brain cells, making it more difficult for neurotransmitters such as serotonin to do their job of facilitating communication between your brain cells.

Inflammation literally depresses brain function.

Anti-depressants of the SSRI variety, try to overcome this inflammation produced gap, by increasing the amount of serotonin in your brain.  However, the problem causing depression anxiety is not the amount of serotonin in the brain, but the inflammation gap.

And as the study points out, the inflammation in the brain, starts in the gut.  Inflammation in the gut allows undigested food proteins and toxins to enter the bloodstream, where they enter directly into the brain causing inflammation or are attacked by the immune system, which releases cytokines that enter the brain and produce inflammation.

Inflammation producing foods cause inflammation in the gut and brain.

How does pasta cause depression anxiety?

Here is how pasta and the other foods in the study cause inflammation and depression anxiety.

Pasta, bread, wheat, rice, grains cause inflammation and depression anxiety in two ways.  First, grains and all foods produced with grains contain gluten proteins, which can cause gut inflammation by themselves, or when the gut is already inflamed, can pass through the gut triggering an immune reaction, which then produces inflammation in the brain.

Second, pasta, bread, rice, and grains are converted to sugar, which causes inflammation in the gut and brain, and which also inhibits the production of BDNF (brain derived neutrophic factor) responsible for creating and maintaining brain cells.

Soda contains sugar.  Diet sodas have also been found to cause depression anxiety, most likely because the artificial sweeteners found in diet soda damage the gut, which then leads to the immuno-inflmmatory response causing depression anxiety.

Fatty Red Meat, especially grain fed beef, are high in inflammatory omega 6 fatty acids.  The higher the fat content of grain fed industrial beef, the higher the amount of inflammation and depression producing omega 6 fatty acids, not to mention the harmful hormones, antibiotics, and GMO found in grain fed beef.

A better beef alternative is grass fed beef, which has less omega 6 fatty acids, and more anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids.

Chips are made from gluten and fried in omega 6 and GMO inflammatory vegetable oils.

Not only did the study find, which foods increase the likelihood of getting depression anxiety, the study also discovered which foods can reduce your chances of getting depression anxiety.

Dr. Lucas’ research found foods like coffee, olive oil, vegetables including carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens, if consumed daily, can help reduce inflammation and depression.  In essence a Mediterranean diet similar to the Depression Anxiety Diet.
