25% of Indians living in Mumbai have anxiety, and 10% of Indians in Mumbai have depression, reports the Times of India.
Based on a survey of family physicians going back 10 years, the high rates of depression anxiety in India, corresponds with the economic boom India has experienced during the same period.
“We can blame it on competitiveness, drive for money, overcrowding in cities and other factors that lead to stress,” says Dr. Bharat Shah. Chronic stress releases the stress hormone cortisol, which interrupts digestion, causing damage to the intestinal lining, producing inflammation in the body and brain, which then leads to depression anxiety.

One would imagine that with India’s increased wealth over the past decade, Indians would be happier, instead of becoming more depressed and anxious.
The cause of the increased depression and anxiety in India, is not the increase in wealth per se, but the increase in wealth inequality. India is suffering from Affluenza, where rising wealth inequality, creates rising rates of depression anxiety.
Humans are social animals. We judge ourselves by how we fit into the social hierarchy. When everyone is at the same income level, wealth inequality is non-existent, and so too is the stress of trying to maintain or advance one’s social position.
When wealth suddenly increases, and this new wealth goes into the hands of only a few in the society, the stress from the pressure to maintain or advance your social position increases.
This is why people in poor countries, where there is little wealth inequality, tend to be happier than people in rich countries with greater wealth inequality.

This phenomena can be clearly seen in social media, where heavy users of social media sharing sites such as facebook and pinterest, experience higher rates of depression anxiety. On social media, people see others in their social circle showing off their vacations, designer cakes, partying, and social media becomes a competition over who is having a “better” life.

On the national level, the way to address the growing rates of depression anxiety, is by addressing the growing wealth inequality in India. On the individual level, it is important not to let stress caused by the pressure of keeping up with your social circle, turn into depression anxiety.
consciously avoiding placing emphasis and measuring your self worth, by the amount of material possessions or wealth you can accrue, and choosing some other yardstick be it health, family, sports, friendships, hobbies, as well as finding inner peace by stepping of the treadmill of the perpetual pursuit of material possessions, will eliminate the stress and depression anxiety caused by wealth inequality.
